JENKINS SAYS "LET THE VOTERS DECIDE"
Julie Jenkins, candidate for Tampa City Council District 4, announced she will not seek appointment to fill either of the two city council seats recently vacated by the resignations of Councilmembers Dingfelder and Saul-Sena. Jenkins, whose campaign slogan is "It's about People," cited respect for the democratic process as the reason for her decision. She said, "my authority to represent the people of District 4 should come directly from the voters who live there, not the four remaining council members."
Tampa City Council is comprised of just five members after the two resignations. Under current law, those members will appoint two interim representatives to serve out the eight months remaining of the terms for the two vacated seats.
Jenkins hopes the City Council will honor the citizens of Tampa and select people who are not candidate for those seats and who do not intend to run for them. "It contradicts my concept of fair play to give a candidate a leg up on other candidates with the blessing of the elected body," she said. "It's only right that any applicant who seeks a permanent seat on City Council make that request directly to the voters, not City Council. Representative government demands no less."
